About The Blog

Registan.net covers Eurasian politics and news, seeking to draw more attention to issues and news rarely covered in much depth, if at all, by Western media. Our focus is primarily on the former Soviet Republics of Central Asia and the Caucasus, with an eye to domestic politics, relations with with rest of the world, and foreign policy as well as the occasional report on pop culture.

Registan.net was launched in 2003 in order to offer analysis and context to current events from the region as well as to offer original reporting.

What does the word “registan” mean?

Traditionally, “registan” is the main square in an oriental city. Usually very beautiful.

I am happy there is some poeple to be interested by an other country that their own, above all by Uzbekistan which is not a very important one in the world’s stage. In France The elections’ news were told only during 15s on one TV chanel, and nobody among my friends was revolted. Thank not to be selfish.

Great blog, very interesting. However, what’s the logic behind grouping the Caucasus with Central Asia? I realize they’re all former Soviet Republics and therefore have some common issues and that Azerbaidjan is Turkic like most in Central Asia, however, what about Armenia, Georgia and the regions in the Russian Caucasus?

Or are there enough common issues?

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am interested to know about the heading “Mughlistan” used in your website.

Thanks and regards.

It’s just a way of saying “India and Pakistan.”
