About Nathan

I am an Oregon native, now residing in the Midwest. I graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.A. in Political Science in 2000. After graduation I joined, the Peace Corps, thinking I was going to Russia. As fate would have it, I was assigned to Uzbekistan, where I learned that there were places far more interesting than Russia. I lived and worked in the city of Navoiy. In 2007, I finished my M.A in International Studies in Russia, East Europe, and Central Asian studies at the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. My award-winning thesis can be found here.

I was the first Regional Editor for Central Asia and the Caucasus (as well as Russia and Eastern Europe) at the wonderful Global Voices Online. My current work keeps me engaged with Central Asian affairs. Nothing I or others write on Registan.net reflects upon my employer or its clients, nor does it represent either’s opinions, policies, or ideas.

For a bit more about me, you can find interviews with me here and here.
