Well That Makes Sense
President Bush has named William Wood as the new ambassador to Afghanistan. He is replacing Ronald Neumann, whose departure is something of a mystery, though I wouldn’t be surprised to learn it has something to do with frustration at the total lack of support from Washington.
Wood hails from Colombia, which makes sense. The theory must be that he has experience running an anti-narcotics effort. Of course, the anti-cocaine effort in Colombia is an abysmal failure, and repeating the same tactics in the anti-opium effort in Afghanistan look set to make the security problems—to say nothing of the drug problem—far, far worse. Why does Bush insist on continuing the same tired old failed policies, when new thinking is clearly needed?
