The EU took a balanced approach to its relations with Uzbekistan and agreed to extend most of its sanctions, lifting the ban on ministerial meetings, limiting the visa ban extension to six months, and agreeing to review sanctions in three months. The EU ministers did, the AP reports, acknowledge what it said were moves by President Karimov to limit some of his powers.
For its part, the US welcomed the EU’s decision.

No sanctions have ever worked on Islam Karimov. If Europe wants to get something done they need to be more friendlier towards him. He needs to feel needed, otherwise you’re gonna lose Uzbekistan.
