Reporters Without Borders has a press release on the blocking of yet another news website, UzMetronom. This makes the fairly new site one of the latest additions to the list of news websites inaccessible from Uzbekistan (by regular means, of course).
On top of this, Tribune-Uz is shutting down its website until further notice.
Starting from today, our website is suspending its activities. I have no idea yet as to how long this will last. Believe me, there are serious grounds for such decision. There will be no additional comments to this decision, and I ask you not to ask any questions. There will be no answers. Time will bring answers.
And in other media news, a journalist with UzA has been fired for visiting RFE/RL’s Tashkent bureau in spring of 2005, well before he began working for UzA.
Uzbek newspapers published ads to the effect that RL/RFE needed young journalists for some new program. It was because of it that the then unemployed young journalist turned up there.
Amankulov never passed the screening. He eventually found a job with UzA, in the international news department. Unfortunately, it did not last. He was fired barely a month later. Amankulov has not been able to find another job ever since.
