Canada’s Commitment to Afghanistan

We tend to poke a lot of fun at our neighbors to the north down here south of the border, so it’s only fair to offer up some praise for Canada now and then. Canada’s Chief of Defense Staff General Rick Hillier has some strong words in defense of his military’s commitment to the mission in Afghanistan. In the wake of the London attacks…

Terrorists must not be allowed to feed on the instability of countries like Afghanistan lest that instability be allowed to “come home to roost here,” Gen. Rick Hillier said Thursday. “The London attack actually tells us once more: we can’t let up,” Hillier told a media luncheon at National Defence Headquarters.

“There are those who might say that by doing that we make ourselves a target in Canada here for terrorists. I would come at it this way. . . . We need to take a stand.”

“We’re not going to let those radical murderers and killers rob from others and certainly we’re not going to let them rob from Canada,” said Hillier, appointed chief of defence staff earlier this year.

“These are detestable murderers and scumbags,” Hillier said. “They detest our freedoms, they detest our society, they detest our liberties.”

And why the strong words?

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden declared Canada a “legitimate target” in March 2004. Two months later, an internal RCMP risk assessment noted that Canada was the only country left on his list that had yet to be attacked.

Hillier, who commanded NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Kabul for six months last year, said Canada has “a very big profile,” regardless of what role its military plays in the Muslim world.

As a member of the G8, and as a highly rated Western society that values rights and individual freedoms, Canada already represents “the exact opposite of what people like Osama bin Laden, Mullah Omar and those others want.”

Glad to have him on our side.

Also, Australia’s sending the SAS back to Afghanistan, and John Howard is talking tough too.

I live in Montreal, and have noticed federal and local security and police watching around our metro (subway) stations, when usually they are nowhere to be found. Guess we are taking it seriously.

We need more Canadians like Gen. Hillier!

Perhaps his mother is American, as was Churchill’s.

That is great news, Nathan, especially since that news came out last week about the number of terrorist groups stationed in Canada.

That’s a little bit of good news, but unfortunately what the military thinks is usually ignored in Canada. Hillier is already taking a lot of flak from pacifist politicians, and since Canada’s military has been eviscerated over the course of the 90s I doubt we’ll be able to contribute much to the GWOT. I hope the Anglosphere spirit awakens here, but I see few signs of that yet. Security at our transport hubs is non-existent. It will take a terrorist attack in Canada to get people’s attention. Most Canadians, being friendly and nice people, believe that if we leave the Islamists alone they will leave us alone. No-one has yet bothered to shatter that illusion.

Certainly our liberal leaders do not feel this
way, and he will get lots of noise from them,
even after the London bombing by TERRORISTS.
They have the facts so deep in the huge space
in their heads, they will never see the light
of day from them.
Canadians are not nice, they are apathetic,
most have no idea of what is happening regarding
the war on terror.
Heck, they are still at the ” war for oil”
stage and will not get past it as they are too
lazy to try and learn anything different.
We should be ashamed at the state of our army,
etc, but does anyone write about it, or do
anything?
NO, they just get out there and vote in the
liberals again, even knowing how corrupt
they are.
So, someone spoke out, after how many years?
Please.

Two or three years ago we had a Canadian au pair, and we still keep in touch with her. Her boyfriend, who we also knew, is in the Canadian army and has done two tours in Afghanistan. He is said to be very committed to serving there.

Perhaps his mother is American, as was Churchill’s.

And perhaps his American mother is of good old English stock, as was Churchill’s.

Just do me one favor – ask the general why they haven’t reactivated the very fine 1st Commando Regiment (deactivated for spurious reasons) that I trained with in Petewawa (sp?) back in 1978 when I was in A 2/75 Ranger?

Al-Qaida is a bunch of nuts guys who wants to rule the world we all know that .The only way to defeat them is by scissoring their operatives and ideology, faith out of who believes in them and has a potential to flow in Canada FIRST and then world.Once we get securing our boarders and cities we can look at getting that Bin Laden.

Hi,
I’m sure this will cause waves but here goes..
you’ll never catch binladan (his freedom allows the terror)This war is questionable,to much points to oil.sadly 9-11 is questionable (worked verywell for some poeples plans for america)
If you want to see the truth it is outthere but like I said you have to want to. Follow de-classified documents
highly educated poeple bring strange facts (proven) to light. and I will close with media,
bought and paid for along time ago. Many great men of history have warned of the threat.
P.S. Look at the names of the current admin. in the states and follow thier deeds from say the 60’s it’s not hard to see whats up if you want to! thank you for putting up with what i’m sure to many of you see as complete and utter slop.
sighed…Some dubm canuck

Well, learn spelling and punctuation and you could at least hope to make a stale and asinine post hoc fallacy argument.

Eh. The government fucks up, people die. There is no good out on this one. Afghanistan is fucked because the states pulled support once the soviets took off, so I can’t say I like the idea of pulling “our” guys out. Sucks to be them, I guess, sucks even more to be an Afghani though. Afghanis aren’t getting paid and fed to live in a warzone. Maybe Afghanistan will get back on its feet, maybe it won’t. Maybe it’ll be another Israel for Canada – the UN’s first mission and the blueprint for all ensuing, missions, template for many marvelous successes. The bottom line is, the old government made the commitment, the new government kept it, and now some poor broke fucks from down east get to catch bullets for it. Governments suck, war sucks, but that’s the way it goes.
Having said that, the war on terror is a cool soundbyte and does wonder for finding a loophole for a government ideologically opposed to socialism to throw money into the economy. However, the actual concept is fucking retarded. You don’t make war ON terror, you make war WITH terror. Terror has too long a track record of success to be given up by anybody. No one fucks with the biggest terrorists. What worked for Sinn Fein and Irgun will work for anyone else. Rome crucified Carthaginian POWs and Dracula built his legend on sharpened sticks. Effective terror means the other guy is too busy shitting his pants to do anything. Al-Qaeda is small fry. If they were good at it, we’d have them as our leaders in a couple of years. The simple fact is, you can break people just like animals, the same way you can get them to line up in their enclosures and stand still on the conveyor belt to the meat grinder.
@Some dubm canuck: Yep, can’t say I disagree with you. But you’re going to go blind looking for white knights in war or politics, because “when you jump in the cesspool you become a turd.” (Suzuki) Any lily-livered crap like humanizing your subjects is a fucking handicap. You’ve got filet mignon on one hand and eyeballs and horns on the other – it doesn’t fucking matter that it’s all beef, it matters that one gets served in a restauraunt and another ends up as fucking dog food.
Not to say that we’re all innocent, just sitting our asses down here trying to justify this crap, which in pure numerical terms is insignificant compared to a few hours of peace in, say, India or Congo. But then we’d be comparing eyeballs and horns versus filet mignon, wouldn’t we?
Are Canadians lazy about this shit? Who isn’t lazy about this shit? You think of all the crap you COULD do to help any given situation, and you start to understand the appeal of redemption through confession real fucking fast. If not, congratulations, you’re a psychopath. Go run for office.

@Dave: Are you talkin’ ’bout dem recon boys got their wrists slapped for beating that Somali kid to death on account of fucking with their supplies? I didn’t realize we disbanded TWO regies. Still, from the perspective of a soulless analyst, when you’ve got a bigger carcass you need a sharper cleaver.

@Phil: Hey, how ’bout a betting pool on which way the CN tower lands when half of Air Canada smashes it into the skydome? I think the pointy bit at the top will get stuck in the ground, like a huge lawn dart. Actually, it’s dependent on the shelter provided to it by other office towers around it. If they parked enough fertilizer bombs around it – underground parking near the central pillar that supports the rest of the I-beams and mirrored glass – they could literally blow it away. If Canada escapes attack, it’ll be because it’s under the terrorists contempt, not because of any security improvement.

also @ some dubm Canuck: the wizened old towelhead is the top salesman for USA government bonds. American Presidents rule for eight years. Jobs are popular and create benefits for the present, and if the nation implodes at some point in the (politically speaking unimaginably distant future) then who gives a fuck if China’s just going to run it into the dirt anyways? All the CCP has to do is wait until they’re developed enough to become the next Lone Superpower and quote Calvin Coolidge straight back at the land that sunk the British Empire by demanding their cash back after making a killing on the killing.
