State Orders Embassy Families to Leave Uzbekistan

by Nathan on 6/2/2005 · 5 comments

via David Walther: The State Department not only granted the Tashkent embassy’s request. It has taken the additional step of ordering the families of all Tashkent embassy staff to leave Uzbekistan.

Update: Welcome Instapundit readers! Thanks for stopping by. Be sure to check out the earlier post on this matter. And in the midst of all this, there are still the little things to make us laugh.

over at instapundit, they’re saying there’s no confirmation for the ordered evacuation. has this been confirmed?

Well, I’m confident it’s true. I trust David and his report from yesterday is corroborated elsewhere.

I don’t feel comfortable releasing the message David sent me without his express permission to do so. And I’ve removed something from the post that I feel was irresponsible for me to mention if this is true.

What I can say is that when I was evacuated from Peace Corps, there wasn’t a press release. I’m not sure how State works. I’m not sure where Glenn’s person at State is posted. What I do know is that the request was sent from Tashkent to DC.

there is and may not be an official confirmation of this… but they are leaving.

the new travel warning is out today through the warden system, check out the embassy website for official info on any of this at http://www.usembassy.uz

oh, and there is a new addition to the travel warning: they are telling us “American
citizens currently in Uzbekistan should consider departing Uzbekistan
via available commercial options.” this is very new.
