From the Ground

From the Kyrgyz Elections mailing list:

Waiting to hear more but the White House has been stormed and the opposition has apparently seized the seat of power. No word yet on what this means or if there will be a counter-revolution but from what I saw today it was a clear revolution. A bit scary at times – I saw people beaten, ambulances carrying away the injured, cars stoned, window being broken and a Kyrgyz flag being flown from the top floor of the White House. Apparently it was after the people were charged by the horse guards and did not retreat that the militia began to leave the scene.

I am told that CNN was covering much of it live. There is a new opposition, er rather, I guess government website here: http://www.akaevu.net/

Here’s a picture of the horse charge from the mailing list:

Storming the White House:

Kurmanbek Bakiev has apparently been put in charge and is promising order and new elections.

From Akaevu.net Emails:

Welcome to http://www.akaevu.net

The regime of Akaev has started the massive attack on the most popular websites of Kyrgyzstan http://www.gazeta.kg and http://www.kyrgyz.us both at home and abroad. We continue fighting for freedoms of speech and press, that is why the gazeta.kg team is launching a new website http://www.akaevu.net informing the visitors about the latest news. The authorities can keep trying to shut down as many websites as they want, but they will never make us keep silent. This mailing list will travel from one domain to another together with the database of users. We will do our best in keeping the world informed!
